On the way there I saw six Black-Fronted Terns. Four were flying along the Buller River, and the other two along the Howard River. ( I hope they appear at Wash Bridge -- Wairau River this year!!!
The first birds I heard were Song Thursh, Bellbird, Grey Warbler and Tui. Then I saw two Mallard ducks, a pair, walking towards me. There also was a Blackbird on the grass, two shag species swimming (Black and Little), a few Black Swan, and a Pukeko (Recently split from Purple Swamphen, they are now Australasian Swamphen, so look for that on Ebird ;))
While I was photographing the Mallard pair I spotted a plump Kereru in a near by tree! He was very still, great for photos, but almost every were I could stand there would be sticks or branches, or the light from the wrong angle! He did move though and I got some better pics.
After looking at the lake birds, we went along the Braeburn track. There were only Grey Warbler, Silvereye, Bellbird etc. But we did see a few Rimu trees!
